Mirrorless from Canon: Second Camera Body Consideration

All the benefits of a full frame camera from Canon without breaking the bank might be a dream come true. After years of shooting with a Canon 5D miii, I found myself getting a little bit too comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I love this camera and I am so proud of the body work I have produced with it. I don’t plan on replacing it anytime soon, but I have been considering expanding my set up with a second camera body. Not only will a second camera body allow for me to shoot more photos without having to changes lenses, but can also expand the places I might bring it and the content I shoot.

The Canon EOS RP is the newest full frame mirrorless camera from Canon. It is significantly smaller and lighter than the regular DSLRs from Canon, and even a fraction of the price [1]. The camera was announced back in September, and the endless online reviews and video tutorials now have people realizing the true benefits of this little beast of equipment.

I have been considering investing in a second camera body for a few months now. It is an investment that many photographers consider- it allows for back up if your camera fails and a quicker transition from lenses.

As a surf photographer, my water housing is something I use regularly and the only true downside to it is the time it takes to set up. A second camera body can allow for me to switch much quickly between shooting on land and in the water. It takes about 15 minutes to set up my water housing, and about the same to take it apart. When on a photoshoot, this is precious time taken out from photographing. A second camera body is also crucial in wedding photography, especially if you are a lover of prime lenses. I am constantly switching between my 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm in wedding settings.

This is where the benefits of investing in a second camera body have come into play- and the EOS RP looks like the perfect fit. Sticking with a familiar brand, but having all the benefits of a mirrorless camera. Capable of faster autofocus, better performance in video, and so compact that it could fit in a jacket pocket [2]. This camera from Canon is a smart investment, and can change the way any photographer shoots.
